Where the heck are they?!: Craig David

Hi guys!
Honestly this post was completely written on a whim! I was listening to my all-time favourite tracks on my phone recently. By the way, I LOVE music. I can't even begin to explain. So anyway, I was listening, and I got to Craig David's "Rise and Fall" featuring Sting, and I was like, "Where the heck is Craig David!" I even put it on twitter. I am one of those people who get intrigued by the "no-longer-happening-ness" of life. Businesses that fold up, TV shows that get cancelled (not the ones that suck though), singers who are no longer famous, you know, stuff like that make me want to find out why.
So I wondered, maybe I should start a new series on the blog about this-to be honest I will leave that decision to you guys.
But back to Craig David: My goodness. 2000 to 2006 I think? People LOVED that guy. "Fill me in, "Walking Away", "Rendezvous"...people were really feeling him! My fave tracks were "Rise and Fall", "Once In a Lifetime" and "Unbelievable". I think the video for "Unbelievable" is just so sweet, if you are patient enough to watch him walk miles for the most part of the video, just to get his lady who is still snoozing away in bed, some coffee-which is the sweet part of course. :-)

Nostalgia time!

OK so he released an album -"Signed, Sealed, Delivered" in 2010....
But I am not into plagiarism, so here is an excerpt from www.juicymagonline.com,

"David’s debut album, Born To Do It, released in the US in July 2001 and has since went on to sell over 7 million copies, and Slicker Than Your Average, David’s follow up album, has sold over 3 million copies since its 2002 release.

David’s album, The Story Goes…, released in the UK in 2005, and in the United States in 2007,only was well received in the UK. That followed by lack luster American sales and record label changes impacted DAVID’s fourth and fifth projects, Trust Me and Signed Sealed Delivered resulting in a brief musical hiatus.

During his departure from music, David began focusing on leading people to a healthier lifestyle and went on to spread his knowledge through Twitter.

With a new found health consciousness and personal confidence, Craig David is currently gearing up to go on a UK and release a garage inspired album later this year."-Mar, 2013  [source]

So that's the deets on what happened with him. Still doesn't clarify much for me though. But I guess life is all about changes.
And he really has been spending a lot of time at the gym!

I like a man who looks built and trim-but this kind is a little bit too much for me! Lol.

Did you ever like Craig David? If you did, what were your fave tracks?

"We should all be feminists".

Many of you know about Beyonce's feature on her latest album on the song "Flawless". Click this tumblr link to listen to the song and of course the inspiring speech by our very own Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Artiste spotlight: Lorde

Lorde is definitely my newest artiste crush! Gosh, to think she’s just 17! I had heard and fallen in lorrrve with her hit single “Royals” before I found out how young she was. My admiration for her tripled immediately, for obvious reasons. She’s a songwriter too, not just a singer. A thought even came into my head: “Dear (for-now) unborn child, if you decide to become a musician when you grow up, I won’t stop you! Just make sure you get a degree!”

But you know what I also love about “Royals”? The lyrics. Very deep, witty and its similar to Jessie J’s “Price Tag”. Now I'm the type of girl who is crazy about rhythm and pays little attention to lyrics-and yes the rhythm of this song is what got me at first, but when I listen to the lyrics.....

Peep the lyrics:

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address
In the torn up town, no post code envy
But every song's like:
Gold teeth
Grey Goose
Tripping in the bathroom
Bloodstains
Ball gowns
Trashing the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like:
Crystal
Maybach
Diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes
Islands
Tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule
Let me live that fantasy
My friends and I we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows
That we're fine with this, we didn't come from money
But every song's like:
Gold teeth
Grey Goose
Tripping in the bathroom
Bloodstains
Ball gowns
Trashing the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like:
Crystal
Maybach
Diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes
Islands
Tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule
Let me live that fantasy
ooh ooh oh ooh
We're better than we've every dreamed
And I'm in love with being queen
ooh ooh oh ooh
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule
Let me live that fantasy

Ayo Jay

I am a big supporter of young talent. I heard about Ayo Jay from a friend and then listened to "Your Number" on his phone. Of course I was like "Who is this one now", but when I was done listening, I knew without a doubt that Ayo Jay would likely go places. And with the likes of Wizkid and Burna Boy churning out smoking hot jams often, it's obvious the Nigerian market and beyond just embraces and supports younger musicians. But talent has nothing to do with age anyway. I wish Ayo Jay all the best and I'm looking forward to some more great music from him.

Here's his interview below if you wanna know more about Ayo Jay:

And a snippet from www.onenationgroup.com:

"Ayo Jay is about to change the rules of the game.
He has been in the studio recording with J-Sleek, E Kelly, Sarz, Tee Y Mix and many more producers.
He just shot the video for his new single, "Your Number". The video will be out in a few weeks. His brand new single, "Your Number" is already receiving amazing reviews. Expect a lot of material from Ayo Jay before the year runs out.

Before that we present to you the first episode from a series of short clips introducing Ayo Jay.

Solange: Not just that hair.

Source: Youtube via urbanbushbabes.com

All I gotta say is thank you Nikisha of urbanbushbabes.com for posting this vid. I am usually an objective person, but I must confess that I got all caught up (just like many other people I'm sure!) in the "overshadowing effect" a celebrity could have on another. What I mean is, until I watched this performance, I never really wondered about Solange's MUSIC. All I had observed was her relation to Beyonce (of course), her personal style and love for prints, the constant bashing she gets from Joan Rivers in the Fashion Police show (mostly undeserved in my opinion, but hey, it's Joan Rivers! lol) and of course, her lovely natural hair. But her music, no. I saw one or two vids in the past and I just wasn't paying too much attention.

But I saw this video, actually LISTENED to her and thought, oh-my-I-like-Solange! I love this song, I like a few of her other songs too. I went to her website too, and I immediately decided to do a post on her. If you like soul, deep, sassy lyrics and attitude, you'd like her. I just feel she does not get as much credit as she deserves and she deserves some more. Like Nikisha, I really dig this song, and I need to lay my hands on her album asap. :-)

Well ya'all know I'm def gonna say something about her hair!

She sometimes wears weaves, yes, but I can't help but admire her self-confidence and decision to rock her natural hair, as a celebrity. Watching the video, I thought, "Whoa I'm not even sure I have this kinda confidence! If I was a famous singer I'm not sure I could pull this off ".  And even her signature style of ankara prints, and other prints - one has to give it to her for embracing and showcasing ethnic and tribal fashion with a modern twist. And then I remembered a conversation I had lately with my good friend and natural hair lover Shyne, and he said something in response to me saying that I believe that the next 5 to 7 years will reveal a lot more classy women going natural and rocking it boldly too, particularly in this part of the world where ladies are really into what's trending and classy. But Shyne said, "Fola, not until the likes of Beyonce and Nikki Minaj rock natural hair, will many more ladies around the world begin to embrace theirs".

My comment? "TRUE. VERY TRUE."

Celebrity crush: Nneka

I fell in love with her musical style from the moment I heard "Heartbeat" years ago. She's super talented, has unique style and of course, great hair :-)  Of course I might be a bit biased because she is half-Nigerian, but whatevs.  Nneka really has got it going on. It's cool and refreshing to know that a celebrity would have no issues with rocking her natural hair anywhere, everywhere. She does it all; wash and gos, twist outs, bantu knots like the one on the last picture. Sure she might be "lucky" to have a looser curl pattern, thereby more manageable curls for out styles, but her confidence just oozes out of her on all fronts.

Check out Nneka's music on youtube, iTunes etc, if you are not familiar with her music, or learn more about her from her website: www.nnekaworld.com

Ciao!

Ego- Bia nulu

                                                            Photography from egomusik.com

Young Onyeka Onwenu.  Source: www.google.com

I just heard the recent Ego album, “Firsteps” and I thought it was awesome! I have always thought she has got a beautiful voice right from her collabo days with Lagbaja. The CD features soulful songs with even a track that was sort of a modified version of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s “Palaver”. There were also a few gospel-oriented tracks. It was produced by Cobhams Asuquo. I mean what more can I say….. My faves though were “Bia nulu”, “Fall in Love” and “I believe”. Bia nulu is an Ibo spiritual folklore song that was originally sung by Onyeka Onwenu yeeaaars ago. But what Ego did to the song was beyond amazing. Onyeka Onwenu would be proud in my opinion. I heard the song, and I updated my bbm status and said the song just makes me wanna be held and slow- danced with, haha. But really, it's such a soothing song. I encourage you to get the album if you can will you?

If you have listened to the album what do you think? Also if you can send the lyrics and possibly, an English translation in the comments below, it would be much appreciated!
